About the Artist
Nathan Vuuren (b. 1985) is a Johannesburg-based artist whose work delves into the psychological and social complexities of South Africa. Vuuren’s paintings engage with themes of transformation and entropy, exploring how spaces, histories, and bodies evolve rather than simply decay. His expressive brushwork and intricate compositions capture the emotional weight of violence, politics, excess, and personal struggle, all deeply embedded in the landscape he inhabits.
Vuuren’s ongoing exploration of personal and collective histories invites introspection on the evolution of place, memory, and identity. His work often reflects a raw engagement with the tension between beauty, order, and ruin, inviting viewers to reflect on the instability and resilience of the world around them. Vuuren holds an MFA (2007) and MA from Wits University (2011), and was shown in the ABSA L’Atelier in 2008 and 2011. His work has been exhibited widely in South Africa, including at Guns & Rain in 2025, and most recently at FNB Art Joburg 2026.
