Ndasuunje Shikongeni, popularly known as ‘Papa’, is an internationally recognized fine artist, musician, storyteller and educationalist in Namibia. His prolific fine art comments on a wide number of social, historical and political themes, ranging from gender and resources to identity and spirituality. He has pioneered novel techniques in printmaking using cardboard, ink and linoleum.
Since 1994, Papa has had 18 solo exhibitions and 42 group exhibitions in Namibia and around the world including in Zimbabwe, Kenya, South Africa, Senegal, Austria, Sweden, Norway, Russia, and the UK. His work is held in numerous Namibia collections including Bank of Namibia, National Art Gallery of Namibia (NAGN), University of Namibia (UNAM), National Art Council of Namibia, and the Supreme Court, and across the globe in several African countries as well as in the UK, Germany, Russia, USA, Finland, Sweden, Portugal, France and China. Papa has received numerous awards for his work, including from China and Russia.
Papa has lectured at John Maufangejo Art Centre, Rundu College of Education, Ongwediva College of Education, and been a visual art facilitator for the National Art Extension Programme with the College of the Arts. From 2002-2009 Papa was Centre Director: of the John Muafangejo Art Centre, Namibia’s training ground for young artists in different disciplines. He continues to lecture at Namibia’s College of the Arts.
